Temporary abutment cylinder for a multi-unit dental implant system is a component used in the provisional phase of a dental implant restoration, specifically for multiple adjacent implants. Here's a breakdown of its function and purpose:

01/

Temporary Abutment Cylinder:

● It is a temporary component that attaches to the dental implant during the healing phase or while a permanent restoration (like a crown, bridge, or denture) is being fabricated.

● It serves as a placeholder or support structure to hold the temporary restoration (such as a temporary crown or bridge) in place while the implants integrate with the bone (osseointegration) and the soft tissues heal.

02/

Multi-Unit:

● In multi-unit systems, multiple implants are placed adjacent to one another, often to support a fixed bridge or other large restoration.

● The temporary abutment cylinder is used in these situations to connect the implants and stabilize the provisional restoration across multiple implant sites. This helps to restore aesthetics and function during the healing process.

Purpose & Advantages

Support Temporary Restorations

It provides a base for the temporary crowns or bridges, which help maintain aesthetics and functionality while the final restorations are being made.

Soft Tissue Contouring

It helps shape and contour the gum tissue around the implants to ensure that the final abutment fits properly and looks natural.

Patient Comfort

By providing a temporary solution, it allows the patient to have a more comfortable and functional smile while awaiting the permanent restoration.

Procedure Involvement

  • After implant placement, a temporary abutment cylinder may be screwed onto each implant, and a provisional restoration (temporary bridge or crown) is placed on top of the cylinder.
  • Once osseointegration is complete and the gum tissue has healed, the temporary abutments are removed, and the permanent abutments and final restorations are fitted.

FAQ

Q: What is a temporary abutment?

A: Temporary abutments are an essential component in restorative dentistry procedures. They allow the tissue around the implant to heal while also providing an attachment point for the crown, bridge, or other dental restoration.

Q: What is the torque for a Straumann temporary abutment?

A: Screw the abutment into the implant and tighten it with a minimum torque value of 15 Ncm, without exceeding 35 Ncm. Customization is to be performed in the mouth of the patient or chairside in a controlled surgical environment with sterile instruments, preferably single-use sterile instruments, using aseptic technique.

Q: How much do you torque a Straumann implant?

A: All Straumann® permanent abutments are torqued in at 35 Ncm; all occlusal Straumann screws are torqued in at 15 Ncm. (Table 1) 8. The instrument does not have an automatic stopping mechanism (nor does it click or make any other noise as an indicator).

Q: How painful is the abutment on an implant?

A: Sometimes, the dentist needs to perform a smaller surgery to place the abutment. This is a minor surgery that only involves the gums. It may cause some bleeding and swelling, but pain from having the abutment placed is less severe than any pain experienced after placing the metal post.
