Key Features and Purpose

Angulation Adjustment

The angled abutment allows for correction of the implant's angulation. If an implant is placed at an angle that doesn't align with the desired position of the prosthesis, an angled abutment helps correct the orientation, facilitating a better fit for the restoration.

Restoration Adaptation

In cases where the implant is placed in a difficult-to-reach position or the implant angle deviates due to anatomical constraints, the angled abutment helps ensure that the final crown, bridge, or other dental restoration is properly aligned with the arch, providing both function and aesthetics.

Common Angles

Osstem angled abutments are available in various angles (e.g., 17°, 30°, or 45°) to suit different clinical situations.

Materials

Like other components in the Osstem system, these abutments are typically made from durable materials like titanium or titanium alloys, which are biocompatible and ensure the longevity of the restoration.

Clinical Applications

Off-axis implants

When the implant is placed at an angle due to space limitations or anatomical constraints (e.g., near the sinus or nerves).

Bone resorption

In cases of significant bone loss where it's difficult to place the implant in a straight line with the opposing tooth.

Esthetics

To achieve a more aesthetic result when the implant doesn't naturally align with the surrounding teeth or gum contour.

Benefits

Enhanced Function

It helps improve the occlusion (bite), ensuring the restoration functions well during chewing or speaking.

Improved Aesthetics

The angled abutment allows for better positioning of the final restoration, leading to a more natural and pleasing appearance.

Versatility

The ability to adjust the angle of the restoration enhances the flexibility of the implant treatment, providing more options for complex cases.

FAQ

Q: When to use angled abutment?

A: When dental implants are not placed parallel to adjacent teeth or contiguous implants, the clinician can use angled abutments to achieve proper restorative contours. However, increased stresses on implants and bone have been associated with use of angled abutments.

Q: What are the best types of abutments for implants?

A: Titanium abutments are known for their strength and biocompatibility, making them suitable for most cases. Zirconia abutments are preferred for their aesthetic qualities, as they match the color of natural teeth. The abutment's shape and size must be compatible with the prosthetic tooth and the implant's position.

Q: What is the choice of abutments?

A: The materials of choice for abutments for final restorations are titanium, gold, zirconium dioxide, and aluminum oxide-based ceramic.

Q: What is the best material for abutment?

A: Titanium represents the ideal material for implant fabrication due to its excellent biocompatibility. However the use of titanium abutments with thin gingival biotype causes greyish hue to surrounding soft tissues. Therefore, various tooth coloured implant abutment materials have been introduced in the past.

Q: What is the purpose of the abutment on an implant?

A: A dental implant is an artificial tooth root. Your jawbone fuses with the implant to provide a secure platform for an artificial tooth (prosthesis). Abutments are connecting pieces that join the prosthesis to the implants. You may need an abutment and a prosthesis as part of your treatment.
